If you love the outdoors or have a special boy in your life who does, you will be inspired by this camping themed first birthday party.

It can be hard to choose a theme for a boy’s first birthday (and even a second) as children’s interests change so rapidly. Jennifer, of Jennifer Stafford Events, had the excellent idea of making the theme for her son’s first birthday relevant to her family.

She wanted to be outdoors and went with a camping theme and natural party decorations as Dad is an avid outdoorsman. An innovative cake, s’mores party favors, a fish pond and make your own trail mix bar are just a few of the highlights!

To set the stage for “Camp Caleb” Jennifer set up a perfect outdoor “campground” utilizing a few of their tents for the children to play in, as well as A-frame tents her husband built for décor.

One of the handmade tents made a perfect place for guests to place their gifts.  Festive and functional decorations are always fabulous!

With so many “junior campers” in attendance, Jennifer wanted to have a great selection of activities for them.  In addition to playing in the tents and a wooden playhouse, a special station was set up specifically for little guests.

The “lil” camper’s zone was a hit! There were bubbles to blow and a nature hunt checklist to conquer.

Creative cakes are definite cause for party talk and the highlight of this dessert table was certainly Caleb’s cake.

With the help of her husband, Jennifer made a vanilla cake in the shape of an A-frame tent.  The fondant wood happy birthday sign is such a sweet touch!

Notice the mini “fire” built out of pretzels? It holds the birthday candle next to the cake — so clever.

In addition to birthday cake, dessert included chocolate cupcakes in camouflage paper liners. Jennifer also made s’mores pops.

A Styrofoam block covered with old road maps was a great way to hold the pops.

Jennifer decorated the party space with a tri-fold backdrop covered in camo wrapping paper.  The “Camp Caleb” bunting was a great touch.  I love the rustic wood inspired font choice!

Jennifer carried the camouflage concept throughout décor and supply details; the local dollar store was a great source for camo printed napkins and plates.

Water bottles were dressed up in darling “Camp Caleb” beverage labels.

Jennifer wanted a simple food menu so burgers and salads were great offerings. To keep snackers happy, she set up a “make your own trail mix bar”.

A great variety of mix-ins were available to accommodate a wide range of palates.  Some of the offerings included: teddy grahams, goldfish crackers, M&Ms, pretzels, popcorn, peanuts, and raisins.  Custom trail mix bags were created by shortening paper bags and stamping them with a “C” for Caleb.

Other refreshments included old fashioned lemonade served up with colorful paper straws with cute, printable camping themed flags.

What’s a s’more perfect camping party favor than a “make your own s’mores kit”? Each favor was cutely packaged in a cello bag with a theme-coordinating bag topper, thanking guests for making [Caleb’s] party s’more fun!

After the birthday boy and young guests were tucked into bed, the “big kids” started a real bonfire. Time for the little ones and time for the adults: one awesome way to celebrate a 1st birthday!
