Little dribblers will love thisboy’s basketball themed birthday party — a fun idea, and a terrific party activity!
The supermom from It’s All About Ty and Ashlee shoots and scores with this celebration for her little Iowa State basketball fan’s 7th birthday.
She cleverly incorporated the team colors with traditional basketball hues, and her DIY decoration ideas and themed snacks are so inspiring that — from the first glance — I started getting ideas for my little athlete’s next birthday party!

With just 15 minutes to set up the party at her local gym, Ty’s mom knew the party décor needed to be simple, lightweight, and portable.
Foam board and strips of butcher paper combine for a fantastic backdrop resembling a referee’s uniform. The awesome “SEVEN” banner created with paper plates, electrical tape, and die-cut letters—makes a bold contrast, and has the added bonus of costing next to nothing!
Wooden letters from Pick Your Plum, Modge-Podged with Iowa State gift wrap, personalize the space, and later became a special keepsake and decorative item for Tyler’s room.
Theme-colored snacks, like orange popcorn (flavored with orange Kool-Aid), are ready to be dished out into paper trays, for snacking between lay-ups (choose your favorite popcorn recipe).
Displaying “mini basketballs”, aka cheeseballs, in a large apothecary jar really adds a lot to the table, and little b-ball players couldn’t stop eating them! Chocolate-covered Oreos, made to look like basketballs, also disappeared fast!
Ty’s mom shares the secret for making these decadent desserts: I don’t use a mold, instead I use a cupcake/muffin tin and place in the candy melts until I think it completely covers the Oreos. It seems to work wonderfully. She used food markers to draw the basketball lines. Cupcakes in team colors with plastic basketball ring toppers were another big hit.
Paper straws and printable images turned ordinary bottles of sports drinks into something extra fun. There was plenty on hand, as well as juice and water, during and between games. Basketball is thirsty work!
Every player went home with a favor bag filled with basketball-themed temporary tattoos, a sports-themed wristband, and an inflatable basketball. Ty’s mom customized the bags with her own printables.
